Kinematics of the ultra-compact helium accretor AM Canum Venaticorum

چکیده
We report on the results from a five-night campaign of high-speed spectroscopy of the 17-minute binary AM Canum Venaticorum, obtained with the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma. We detect a kinematic feature that appears to be entirely analogous to the ‘central spike’ known from the long-period, emission-line AM CVn stars GP Com, V396 Hya and SDSS J124058.03−015919.2, which has been attributed to the accreting white dwarf. Assuming that the feature indeed represents the projected velocity amplitude and phase of the accreting white dwarf we derive a mass ratio q = 0.18 ± 0.01 for AM CVn. This is significantly higher than the value found in previous, less direct measurements. We discuss the implications for AM CVn’s evolutionary history and show that a helium star progenitor scenario is strongly favoured. We further discuss the implications for the interpretation of AM CVn’s superhump behaviour, and for the detectability of its gravitational-wave signal with LISA. In addition we demonstrate a method for measuring the circularity or eccentricity of AM CVn’s accretion disc, using stroboscopic Doppler tomography. We test the predictions of an eccentric, precessing disc that are based on AM CVn’s observed superhump behaviour. We limit the effective eccentricity in the outermost part of the disc, where the resonances that drive the eccentricity are thought to occur, to e = 0.04± 0.01, which is smaller than previous models indicated.

The AM CVn binary SDSSJ173047.59+554518.5
The AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries are a rare group of hydrogendeficient, ultra-short period, mass-transferring white dwarf binaries, and are possible progenitors of type Ia supernovae. We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the recently-discovered AM CVn binary SDSS J173047.59+554518.5. The average spectrum shows strong double-peaked helium emission lines, as well as a variety of met...
متن کاملAccretion disc models for AM Canum Venaticorum systems
Using a model of the vertical structure of accretion discs, we calculate disc spectra across a range of system parameters for the helium-rich AM CVn cataclysmic variables, and investigate thermal instabilities in their discs. Applying a χ2-minimisation technique, predicted HeI and HI continuum and line profiles are compared with those observed for two such systems, AM CVn and CR Boo, to estimat...
متن کاملDirect Detection of SDSS J0926+3624 Orbital Expansion with ARCONS
AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) stars belong to a class of ultra-compact, short period binaries with spectra dominated largely by helium. SDSS J0926+3624 is of particular interest as it is the first observed eclipsing AM CVn system. We observed SDSS J0926+3624 with the Array Camera for Optical to Near-IR Spectrophotometry (ARCONS) at the Palomar 200” telescope. ARCONS uses a relatively new type o...
متن کاملTwo new AM Canum Venaticorum binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III
The AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries are a rare group of ultra-short period, masstransferring white dwarf binaries, some of which may be Type Ia supernova progenitors. More than a third of the total known population of AM CVn binaries have been discovered via the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we discuss our search for new AM CVns in the SDSS spectroscopic data base, and present t...
متن کاملUnstable Helium Shell Burning on Accreting White Dwarfs
AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries consist of a degenerate helium donor and a helium, C/O, or O/Ne WD accretor, with accretion rates of Ṁ = 10−13−10−5 M⊙ yr. For accretion rates < 10 M⊙ yr , the accreted helium ignites unstably, resulting in a helium flash. As the donor mass and Ṁ decrease, the ignition mass increases and eventually becomes larger than the donor mass, yielding a “last-flash...
